Competitive Knowledge for Manufacturing People
=====================================================

HEADS UP! The manufacturing business environment has
been transformed from “survival” to “GROWTH.”

Economic activity in the manufacturing sector grew in
March for the 10th consecutive month, while the overall
economy grew for the 29th consecutive month, say the
nation's supply executives in the latest Manufacturing
ISM Report On Business®.

The report was issued by Norbert J. Ore, C.P.M., chair
of the Institute for Supply Management (tm) Manufacturing
Business Survey Committee and group director, strategic
sourcing and procurement, Georgia-Pacific Corporation.
"The manufacturing sector had another good month in
March as the PMI has now been above the 60 percent mark
for five consecutive months. Both New Orders and
Production remain strong and have significant momentum
going into the second quarter."

Over the past 6-months, to assure that your company was
prepared to take full advantage of the manufacturing
recovery, I have been encouraging you to help your
company sharpen its competitive edge. I recommended
training/education that focused on a “Back-to-Basics”
methodology that has proven to increase speed, improve
customer connectivity, raise quality levels, and reduce
operating costs.

If your company is still operating under a training
and education budget constraint, it’s time to adjust
its priorities. To increase profits and gain market
share during the manufacturing expansion, your company’s
best training and educational option is to identify and
master the BASICS of their manufacturing environment.

And to help you and your company initiate its “Back-to-
Basics” program, I have decided to go on the road again
with my “1-Day-At-Your-Company,” Back-to-Basics workshops
and forums. Like Vince Lombardi helped his teams master
the BASICS of football, let me help your teams master
the BASICS of manufacturing.

You can check out the program by going to:

My limited schedule will fill up fast on a first come,
first served basis. So, if you want your company to
take advantage of this “Back-to-Basics with Bill Gaw”
opportunity, pass my message on to your top management
and encourage them to take action before all the
schedule slots are reserved. They’ll be thankful you
did.

This week I’m sharing with you an article, “Something
Old But Still Appropriate.” Hope you’re in a company
that follows this philosophy. If not, I’m available to
help.

Have a nice day, keep the faith, and stay connected.

SOMETHING OLD BUT STILL APPROPRIATE
“Goals, Roles, Rules, and People.”

There is little doubt in the minds of most people that
individual achievement, while important to overall
company performance, is no guarantee of success.
Therefore it came as no surprise when I heard the
results of a Harvard Business School study that
concluded: when business management concentrates on
the replacement of people as their main thrust in
problem solving; problems tend to become unsolvable.

This study went on to say that trying to solve complex
business problems by "changing the players" was a
common characteristic of poor performing companies.

There are four basic elements in company performance:
GOALS, ROLES, RULES AND PEOPLE.

GOALS - This is the company game plan that will
define the level of achievement required
by the team to assure a predetermined
level of business success.

ROLES - A definition of the jobs to be done and who
has the accountability and authority to execute.

RULES - The policies, procedures and processes that form
the basis of consistent action and performance
excellence.
PEOPLE - The players that make up the team; a company's
most valuable asset.

The study concluded that companies that attacked these
elements from the bottom up were losers, while companies
that prioritized its problem solving from the top down
were the winners.

It's literally amazing that when a company establishes
its GOALS, defines the ROLES, and documents the RULES;
PEOPLE problems disappear and the need to "change the
players" seldom materializes.
